He’s now a Croda Research Fellow and Nautilus is Croda’s Global Centre of Innovation for Marine Biotechnology. More about Russ Kerr:
He received his B.Sc. in chemistry and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Calgary, and subsequently worked as a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University with Professor Carl Djerassi (the “Father of the Pill”). Kerr joined Florida Atlantic University in 1991 where he established a research group in the field of marine natural products. In 2003 he co-founded the Center of Excellence in Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology in Florida – a consortium of public and private universities, a not-for-profit research institute, the Smithsonian as well as several biotechnology companies. He is a Professor, a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Marine Natural Products and the Levesque Chair in Nutrisciences and Health in the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island with over 150 publications and 15 patents. He is the recipient of the Premier’s Medal of Innovation and various national awards for research in the US and Canada. He has served as a representative on various scientific and policy committees including the National Academy of Sciences, USA, and serves on the editorial boards of six journals and on the scientific advisory board of three biotech companies. In 2007 he co-founded Nautilus Biosciences Canada, a marine microbial biotech company focused on the discovery of novel natural products and other biomolecules from an extensive microbial library. Nautilus was acquired by Croda Int. plc in 2018 and Kerr now is a Research Fellow with Croda. Kerr also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the PEI BioAlliance, a not-for-profit organization focused on the development of the bioscience industry.
