The Ocean Startup Project: ‘Tis the Season to Monitor Your Mental Health

About this Event
Entrepreneurs are particularly vulnerable to mental health challenges. The hyper-speed of startup culture doesn’t lend itself well to pausing and taking a moment to be aware of your mental health. That’s why we’ve decided to bring the startup community together, hear from entrepreneurs, and learn some tips from mental health experts.
You’ll hear from:
- Nadia Laabs, COO of SafetyNet Technologies
- Kshitij Jha, Founder of Kavacha
- Jason Gillham, Founder of Grand River Robotics
- Senator Stan Kutcher, Mental Health Clinician
You can look forward to meeting these three innovative founders who are willing to be open and honest about the challenges they have seen and faced starting a company. Our moderator will help us dive deep into why startups are particularly vulnerable to these challenges and share some advice for creating a more psychologically sustainable startup culture. You are encouraged to join the networking session to ask your questions and share your thoughts following the panel.
Save a space in your calendar and we’ll see you on Tuesday, December 8 at 12:30- 2:00 AST to talk about mental health for entrepreneurs!

This is an opportunity specifically for non-traditional and under-represented workers in Canada’s ocean technology industry to meet, discuss and network. These sessions will act as a peer mentorship group for those new to the ocean sector and/or existing individuals in the ocean economy looking for a group of peers to connect with. The goal for these informal chats are to help people in the ocean technology community feel supported and included. They are intended to create a safe space for peer-to-peer conversations about challenges in the industry.
Is there something you’d like to talk about? A situation you don’t know how to handle? Submit your anonymous question for the Ocean Allies Coffee Chat
Grab your favourite warm drink (coffee, tea, hot chocolate etc.) and join our simulated cafe experience to connect with your ocean tech peers!
The format of these events are meant to be casual, we will follow a general agenda:
- Introduction and welcome
- Break-out sessions to facilitate small group chats
- Return to main room for final discussion and summary
